Press play. This is what your guests hear.

Loon Mountain, about two miles off from here, got its start with Sherman Adams — a New Hampshire native and Dartmouth man who'd just left his job as Eisenhower's chief of staff and quipped he was heading off to operate a ski lodge. That lodge became a full resort by 1966. Somewhere along the Kancamagus, about five miles off from where you are now, sits a little wood-frame farmhouse called the Russell-Colbath House — built around 1831 by Thomas and Amzi Russell, it's the last surviving homestead from the days when families actually lived and farmed in the Swift River valley, before the whole area got folded into national forest land. Pair your rental with a guide that rides along

The best road trips aren't just about where you end up. They're about what you pass on the way: the ghost town off the highway, the covered bridge with a story, the main street that hasn't changed in a century.

That's why we recommend Bearings to our renters. It's an iPhone app that notices where you are and tells you the history and stories of the places around you, out loud, while you drive. There's no route to follow and nothing to tap while you're driving. Just turn it on and go.

A few things renters like:
• It works anywhere, from the interstate to back roads to small towns.
• Stories are picked to match what you care about, from history and architecture to food and local legends.
• The first 20 stories are free, so you can try it on day one.

Questions

The short answers.

What does it cost my business?

Nothing. There's no fee, no minimum and no contract.

What does it cost my guests?

Their first 20 stories are free. After that it's $5.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or a $9.99 Trip Pass for a single trip. Your guests pay the same as anyone else.

Is it safe to use while driving?

It's built to be listened to. Stories play on their own as you drive, through the car speakers or headphones, so there's nothing to tap or read. It runs alongside Google or Apple Maps and steps out of the way when they speak.

Where does it work?

Anywhere your guests go, at home or abroad, on any road or street, with no set route to follow.

Which phones does it work on?

iPhone only, for now.

How does tracking work?

Your guests download Bearings from your link and enter your code in the app. Every purchase they make after that, including every subscription renewal, is credited to you. You get a summary of your guests' purchases with each monthly payout.

Can I stop any time?

Yes. Take the blurb or card down whenever you like. You keep earning on guests who are already subscribed, for as long as they stay.

Who do I talk to?

Me, Trevor, the person who built Bearings: trevor@travelwithbearings.com. I answer everything myself, usually the same day.
